Storage Engineer

Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implements and troubleshoots complex SAN and storage environments based on vendor best practice processes and industry standards;
  • Acts as escalation point for L1 customer technical issues;
  • Provides installation, upgrades, configurations, monitoring and support both for storage and server hardware hardware & operating system software used by Windows, UNIX and Virtualised environments in Data Centers and customer locations;
  • Supports customers with implementation, daily monitoring and support of storage solutions;
  • Manages escalated storage support issues, coordinates communications between operations staff; supports staff to resolve complex issues and assists with escalating issues;
  • Participates in managing customer change requests and problem ticket resolution;
  • Documents environments, processes and procedures to enable support of environments by other members of storage team;
  • Provides periodic environment reviews and suggestions for enhancement of services or resiliency of environments;
  • Works with Service Delivery Managers to propose enhancements to clients storage infrastructure in order to meet client’s compute environment requirements;
  • Remains current on technical and company related literature/correspondence and regularly reviews administrative procedures;
  • Keeps current with manufacturer technical certifications, specialisation exams, and licenses;
  • Provides technical leadership and acts as technical resource and mentor to team members;
  • Documents procedures for Operations and Administration teams;
  • Supports and conducts self in a manner consistent with customer service expectations;

Experience:

  • Experience in the following is required;
  • Supporting SAN and server environments;
  • SAN and NAS technologies (iSCSI, FCP, CIFS, NFS, etc) particularly Netapp;
  • Configuration and cross-training of client-side storage applications;
  • Knowledge of enterprise and mid-range storage hardware and software;
  • NetApp;
  • IBM – ESS and DS lines;
  • HP – XP, EVA, and VA lines;
  • Working with enterprise SAN switch infrastructures including zoning and monitoring of, Cisco and Brocade and other brands;
  • Performing data replication, local and extended distance, with any major vendor Managing storage virtualisation under products such as IBM SVC, IBM V7000, NetApp Vseries line, or EMC VNX lines;
  • Managing NAS units such as Dell PowerVault, Onstor or EMC Celerra lines, and NetApp;
  • Managing storage on any major Unix / Linux operating systems;
  • General cognisance of storage metrics, storage trend analysis and reporting;
  • Knowledge and working experience of backup solutions such as Symantec Backup, HP Data Protector etc;
  • Understanding of Networking technologies (TCP/IP, routing, etc) and Windows, Unix and virtualised OS pertaining to storage access requirements;
  • Presales support to sales team;
  • May consider an equivalent combination of education and experience;

Desireable Certifications:

  • One or more storage certifications from NetApp, IBM, HP or EMC;
